I’ve written before that I am a voracious reader, that I love books. Their weight, their smell and most importantly, their ability to give some respite from being a mother of four.
This love wasn’t innate, that’s to say; I was NOT born with the love of books.
In fact, I was a slow reader. Very slow reader, sluggish even. The words did not come easily and they certainly did not paint vivid pictures in my mind. I was put in the “slow reader” class, yet I still struggled- for years. Never fully comprehending the sentences, as I had to read each word slowly and separately, never learning to flow them together…
Until fourth grade.
Until, Mrs. Kimes.
Until, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. This book captured and captivated me, as Mrs. Kimes read it to our class in weekly installments. Judy Blume’s words wove a magic carpet that took me to new places and new experiences, her books helped me face sisterhood, puberty, scoliosis and yes, even my own sexuality.
My big girls, both “slow readers” themselves love to read, thanks to Meg Cabot. Neither one really liked to read until the seventh grade. Judy Blume didn’t do it for them, the Magic Tree House series- bombed out. Everything I tried just fell on deaf ears, until they found Meg Cabot. Her words spoke to them, like Judy’s spoke to me.
Captain Underpants whispered to Chase. (He still doesn't LOVE to read.)
The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss screams to Maddie.
What author first spoke to you? Too your children?

It's about damn time girl...I was starting to wonder what happened to you! Glad you're back! ;)
I didn't learn to LOVE reading for the pure joy of it until I reached the age of 12. My mom handed me the VC Andrews book "Flowers in the Attic" and I was officially hooked. My mom would tell me it was bedtime and I gladly went...little did she know I had a hidden flashlight and would bury myself under my covers with that flashlight and book until four in the morning...unable to put the book down.
As for my kids....
Justin was hooked on the Harry Potter book in 1st grade! It took him all year to read that one book but he was determined and now he's reading James Patterson's teen series "Maximum Ride".
Brendan loves the Captain Underpants books too.
I guess I grew up on the Judy Blume books, too. I also read, and re-read the Beverly Cleary (Beezus & Ramona) books -- because I felt like they were written about my neighborhood.
I could go on and on about books. I'll stop there -- unless you want to hear more!
My best friend is a fourth grade teacher and she reads that book to her class every year. She LOVES it!
My kids aren't quite old enough to be captured by a book yet, but they do love their Sandra Boynton books.
The first book I remember REALLY liking was Hank the Cowdog in the 2nd grade.
I LOVE reading, and have already started stocking up on Books for Boo. She is going into 1st, and I have a ton of chapter books. Classics and non. I can't wait.
Little House in the Big Woods got me hooked on reading. I can't wait till my girls can read the series. My son loved the Magic Tree House book series but he really, really got into it with Harry Potter. That JK Rowling did amazing things for this generation I think.
Anne of Green Gables helped me fall in love with reading. I followed her down that winding tree-covered road. My first born loves Junie B. Jones.
My son hasn't been bitten by the bug yet, but I'm hoping.
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing was one of my faves too. I read every Judy Blume book I could get my hands on. Before Judy Blume was the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle Series and the Boxcar Children. I started reading before Kindergarten and have always loved it.
My boys... do not love reading. But my daughter is her mother's child.
mom...we are not slow readers...you are just to fast.....your not normal! just kidding...I love you
I too loved Judy Blume growing up. I also liked Babysitters Club. My oldest 2 both like the Stink books and Magic Tree House. Oh and Hank the Cowdog. They have read some Judy Blume but weren't in love with them like I was.
I dont remember getting hooked, I just remember always reading! walking to and from with a book. eating dinner, driving in the car, going to the bathroom, bathing. All done with a book in my hand!!! Books I remember loving...Little Women and every other Louisa Alcott book available. I loved Mandy series, the Babysitters club, Anne of Green Gables, Mabel Series, weirdly enough I read Readers Digest Condensed Books ALOT!!!
